Derby Style

Derby Style on Mornings with Fox 43 | Hannah & Husband

This morning, Husband and I were up early to talk Derby style with Knoxville’s Moira & Abby on Mornings with Fox 43. They are just the sweetest over there! You can watch the segment below but there are a couple things I wanted to show up close.

These lapel pins are easy DIY options for less than a dollar a piece. We simply used safety pins to attach them.

The Kentucky Derby is known as “the running of the roses,” so when I found this felt rose in the scrapbooking section of the craft store, I couldn’t resist.

This is an old button we picked out from Nana’s button jar. Vintage buttons often have really cool insignias or regalia that are worth showing off.

The Cubs patch and Fergie Jenkins’ signature couldn’t be seen on television so here’s a better shot.

Here’s the segment. Thanks for having us on Moira!

Cilantro Pesto

Here’s the thing about working for HGTV and DIY Network: I work with a lot of people that are super rad. They’ll say things like, “Last week I was on set with Brian [Patrick Flynn] where he was creating fabulous spaces” like he does. (Have you seen these Spring House videos?) Or something like “Last week I built this coffee table. It’s very industrial chic.” Also, it’s amazing because you’re amazing and this whole conversation about living-with-the-things-we-make is also amazing.

Other times, the ideas are more simple. Like last summer when my uber-talented (and green-thumbed friend) Kelly started making pesto from green things not specified Ina Garten’s recipe. Arugula pesto? What? Madness. Would Ina mind? Do I mind? (Yes, in my mind Ina has full reign over the pesto kingdom where she rules in her white linen pants like only she can.)

So the other night, I decided to give my own spin on pesto a try with the cilantro I’d just bought. Kelly was totally right. You can make pesto from other green, non-basil leaves. It’s a great way to stay healthy and clean out your fridge. Also, I may send this idea to Ina.

Ingredients to Throw In Your Food Processor:

large handful of cilantro
3 Tblsp olive oil
small handful walnuts halves (about 12-15 pieces)
juice of 1 lime
5 cloves garlic

We tossed new potatoes in this pesto and roasted them. We covered pork tenderloin in this pesto and grilled it over charcoal. And then last night, we put it on a swordfish steak and baked it. Delicious!

You should totally try it!

One more thing: This mini food-processor that Husband bought (that I may have mocked) has become one of my favorite appliances!

Have You Tried Eggwhite Soap?

Eggwhite Soap | Hannah & Husband

Last week’s travels brought not just a visit to High Point Market but also a stop in Asheville. While there, I stepped in to a beautiful shop filled with kantha-stitched quilts, linens, and this soap. I mean seriously, you wouldn’t expect me to pass up that packaging would you? I mean I’ve never tried eggwhite soap but between the typography, the little girls, and the price tag of $5, I could only assume it would change my skincare routine forever.

So I brought the lovely package home, instagrammed it (obviously), and then proceeded to actually open the box. As I said in my instagram, it smells like raindrops on roses and Julie Andrews running through the Alps (in the nun habit, not for her life).

So here’s the deal: You lather up this little bar and put the lathered soap on your face as a mask. Let it sit for 5 minutes. Then, rinse it off. I’ve used it a couple times now and have really enjoyed it. It felt like it really cleaned my pores, but it doesn’t feel goopy or contain elements that I can’t pronounce (my latest beef with the entire skin care industry). I also love the smell of chamomile, which is an herb that’s known as an anti-inflammatory when used on skin.

So I started doing a little research and apparently this little magic bar came over from Sweden. It’s meant to mimic the benefits of an actual mask made of egg whites that has been used for years all over the world. Bonus: it’s said to be a favorite of the Queen of Sweden. (OMG you guys, she’s JUST LIKE US.)

Read a little more about this thing I didn’t know was a fad here and here. You can also order some for yourself by clicking here.

So am I just totally late to the party on this one? Have you tried Eggwhite Soap or an eggwhite mask? What did you think?

Crunchy Snack

As of this week, it is officially foodie season at our house. Locally grown veggies are popping up in all the stores, the farmers’ markets kicked off last weekend, and Monday begins our CSA. */cue cheers & applause/* So today I thought I’d share a new favorite crunchy snack with you.

Crunchy Snack | Hannah & Husband

Husband first had this in Brooklyn with the in-laws and I also recently found it in a couple cookbooks (including my absolute fav). I know it seems too simple, but it is just the right thing to munch on as you grill (like we did last night) or to satisfy a salty craving. We were joking that it’s sort of like eating popcorn but it’s so much more satisfying.

All you’ll need:

1 pad each of unsalted butter
about 1/2 tsp good sea salt
radishes

That’s it! Put a little bit of butter on your radish and dip it in just a touch of the salt. Bon appétit!

Trendy Trendy Pom Pom

Today, I just have to mention a trend that I am loving lately: pom poms are popping up everywhere! They’re on scarves, curtains, handbags–you name it. Sometimes, they take the form of a tassel, but I’m equal-opportunity. I love frou-frou in all its many forms. Favs include…

Where do you like your pom poms? Is it just me or does that sound like the beginning to a crafter’s dirty joke?

High Point Market 2015

Hannah B. at High Point Market in the Mr. Brown showroom | Hannah & Husband

This amazing mirror was in the Mr. Brown showroom.

This week, I was lucky enough to go over to North Carolina for a couple days of High Point Market 2015. Each Fall and Spring, the market takes over the town of High Point, North Carolina nearly doubling the population and setting up 11.5 million sq ft of showspace–they literally take over the town. How crazy is that?

North Carolina has long been known for it’s furniture manufacturing so it’s only appropriate that the biggest furniture show would take place there. Much like “Mrket” in NYC, High Point Market is where furniture buyers and interior designers gather to view the collections for the next season.

It was a frenzy of inspiration that will be showing up in posts and future projects, but today I thought I would bring you the highlights. These are some of the trends I think may inspire you as much as they did me.

Whimsical Statement Pieces

When I was in college, it became a running joke that the word “whimsical” always popped up when people were talking about my work. So you can imagine how happy I was to see how playful so many of the pieces were. You can, of course, add as many or as few of these touches as you’d like because often one piece makes a huge impact.

Animal Farm as Comedy

On that same whimsical note, I am pleased to report that designers are finding ways to incorporate animals into designs without real-life taxidermy. Of course, real taxidermy was there because this place had everything. 2 notes from my notebook worth sharing:

1. When given the option to walk past a taxidermy giraffe to use the restroom and just holding it, I will always just hold it. (Husband may find this noteworthy for future road trips.)

2. On booth that shall remain nameless:  If Gaston lived in a Toby Keith song, it would look like this showroom.

But, with a couple of real-life exceptions, play animals were used as fanciful accessories that came in every sort of style, shape, and size. A few of my fav examples…

I, of course, also adored the hive pattern that kept showing up. I chose to include the picture below because I heart the bees too!

Furniture can make you feel feelings.

One thing I really love about interior design is it’s ability to make you feel a certain way without you really thinking about it. For instance, I’m pretty sure the Palm Springs-inspired collection by Celerie Kemble on a patio would make me feel like Myrna Loy. Likewise, the soft, touchy-feely items like ticking fabric and rag rugs reminded me of the home I grew up in.

Wood + Concrete

Aside from the natural wood like is shown above, there were so many ways that I saw wood and concrete used to make very modern pieces.

Let there be lights!

At the end of my first night I went to an event at Visual Comfort and discovered that Heaven, for me, is probably some version of a lighting gallery. Some of my lighting picks are below, and we’ll be talking to some of these makers in the coming weeks!

Another trend often showed with lights inside were old-school, grandma-style cloches.

Lesson Learned: Anything under glass looks way more expensive and important.

Mid-Century Modern

Mid-century modern is a trend that is not going away. We all secretly want to live a Mad Men bar-in-the-office lifestyle and be Charles & Ray Eames. What’s wrong with that? Not a thing. The organic lines (check out the pattern on the front of that Dwell Studio sideboard) and the natural woods are beautiful and, in my opinion, can stick around for as long as they like.

Happy Saturday!

At the 2014 Aspen Ideas Festival, design and innovation firm IDEO recorded this course on Creative Listening that is now on iTunes U. I just started it and am digging the ideas!

*Lovely* Nora Charles goodies made by Curious Pip.

Last weekend, I found Curious Pip on Instagram, and I’ve been swooning ever since! Artist Sarah Burford resides in England where she makes handmade dolls in addition to some old Hollywood style, gorgeous illustration. Check out her Etsy shop as well to find this print of Nora Charles (of Thin Man* movie fame) that I *must* add to my collection.

Do you meditate?

Yes, yes. I know I promised a report from High Point, but we are saving that for a couple days because, quite frankly, my brain needs to calm down. And while we’re on the topic of calming the brain, I’m curious about something: Do you mediate?

Do you meditate? | Hannah & Husband

Depending on who you ask, you’ll may get different definitions of what it means to mediate and why one would even choose to do so. In my experience, the cultural perspectives of different individuals always influence this definition in one way or another. I’d be very interested in knowing your definition because there are parts of the practice of meditation, and mindfulness, that have been in the front of my mind lately.

As I understand it, meditation is about training the mind to calm down and to concentrate your thoughts. One tool that is often used in the practice of meditation is a mantra.

Mantra: (noun) A word repeated to aid in concentration

The mantra intrigues me. As we’ve talked about before, we put a great deal of emphasis on ritual and finding beauty in the everyday around our house. Mindfulness plays greatly into this, but when life gets busy it can be really hard to calm down enough to just sit and take it all in.

So for the past week or so, I’ve been repeating a short mantra. My mantra has been a short prayer of “Thank you.” I try to repeat it any time there’s a quiet moment and my mind begins to wander a bit. I’ve also been thinking it when I find myself completely full of joy or when I feel like getting cynical about the future. (Disclaimer: This inevitably comes after the joyful moment. I swear it’s genetic.)

I picked Thank You because I personally believe that most of the universe is out of my control. Thank You helps me stop and acknowledge my creator and the beauty that surrounds me. It’s training my brain to slow down and (attempt to) concentrate more on the beauty that is here now and be grateful I’m experiencing it all.

A couple days ago, I was thinking that it’s also worthwhile to thank myself. Sometimes you have to stop and appreciate the place you are in and the work you’re doing. Be aware of that moment in time and say Thank You that you are further along in your journey than you were the day/hour/minute before.

My hope is that this mantra becomes a part of who I am. That I will train my mind to ponder gratitude.

What do you think? Do you meditate? Do you have a mantra?

Road Trip to High Point

Road to High Point | Hannah & Husband

Hello! I’ve spent the last few days on a road trip to High Point, North Carolina. Expect a full report soon but, in the meantime, here’s one of the gorgeous views from the trip home today.
