Thanksgiving Decoration: Turkey in the Straw

Turkey in the Straw DIY | Thanksgiving Decor by Hannah & Husband

Several years ago my mom picked up this fun little turkey. Every year she would buy an oversize pumpkin for Halloween, and then come November she would add the turkey to the pumpkin. This year as she pulled the feathers and head out of storage a couple of the dowel rods were broken, so she asked me to do a little turkey surgery. After I fixed hers I stuck them in a straw bale on our front porch. Voilà: Turkey in the Straw.

Before she came to take the turkey back, we decided it would be fun to have one of our own. We cut the shapes out of a scrap of 3/4″ plywood using a jigsaw (for a more permanent turkey use solid wood and be sure to waterproof it), and Hannah painted them to the colors of her choosing. Take a look at our process, and download the templates to create your own!

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving Snack Recipe

I have a slight obsession with Charlie Brown so it is basically a given that my favorite Thanksgiving pick is A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. So this weekend, I decided to make A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving snack. Not being a fan of jelly beans, I used mini M&Ms for color. Enjoy!

Charlie Brown Thanksgiving snack, holiday, Hannah and Husband

Ingredients:

1 bag plain popcorn
1/2 bag pretzel sticks
1 cup mini M&Ms
1 1/3 cup white chocolate chips
1 Tbsp shortening

Steps:

Pop your popcorn. Then, by handfuls, put your popcorn in a larger bowl. The first time I did this, I forgot about all the un-popped kernels that may be in the bottom of the bag so my testers had to look out for seeds lest they lose a filling.

Next, mix in your pretzels and mini M&Ms.

Melt your white chocolate. You can do this over stove in a double-boiler or in the microwave in 30 second intervals. If you’re on the stovetop, you can put the shortening in right away. If you’re in the microwave, I like to wait about a minute and then add the shortening so it’s easier to mix.

Pour the white chocolate over the mixture and stir together immediately. Work quickly to make sure that the chocolate gets mixed in before it starts to harden.

Pour your mixture onto parchment paper to set up. Ours rested over night in the kitchen. The next morning, you can break it apart to serve!

Hers & His

Hers Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, The Duke Ellington Suites, brining the turkey

Hers

Reading:

Our most recent book club pick was Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan. I’ve really enjoyed it, and I think one of the main reasons is because I didn’t know a thing about the plot beforehand. I am never one to read adult fiction and, if I do, I have a tendency to read the last chapter first. (It’s all very Harry Burns, I know.) So if you’re looking for a good read or a good listen (I have the audiobook), I’d highly recommend it. Bonus: If you actually buy the physical book, the cover glows in the dark! All 10 of us gathered in my teensy half-bath the other night just to see.

Listening:

If you are looking for the perfect background music to take away the stress of this holiday week, then you’re in luck! I cannot stop listening to The Ellington Suites–three suites composed by Duke Ellington, one he wrote for Queen Elizabeth after they’re meeting in 1958.

Watching:

Each year, we host Thanksgiving at our house, and this year I’m going to try something I’ve never done before: brining the bird. Needless to say, I went straight to the master.

I wear the black hat, vintage trouble

His

Reading:

Ever since I finished The Imperial Cruise by James Bradley (fascinating book that will make you hate Theodore Roosevelt, a bit disjointed writing) I’ve been fascinated by who we classify as heros or villains and why. When I came across I Wear the Black Hat: Grappling with Villains (Real and Imagined) by Chuck Klosterman, I couldn’t resist. Rethink villains and heros, super and regular, with this book.

Listening:

We caught this performance on the Late Late Show, and I haven’t been able to stop listening to The Bomb Shelter Sessions since. Plus, in this video, the lead singer is wearing a peacock pocket square. Boss.

Old-Fashioned Sugar Cookie Recipe from Woo-Woo

Woo-Woo's Sugar Cookie Recipe | Hannah & Husband

When I was little, baking with Woo-Woo (my grandmother) was one of my very favorite activities. Last year around this time, I shared the story of winning 1st place at the church baking competition with her pumpkin pie on my personal blog. This year, as we get closer to the season of family and houseguests, I wanted to tell you about her sugar cookies.

Woo-Woo baked a few dozen sugar cookies for every holiday. They were huge cookies that were bunny shapes and Christmas tree shapes and snowmen shapes–all with a layer of pale pastel buttercream frosting. I used to think the recipes was her mothers. Then, when I finally got her to show me the recipe, she pulled out a newspaper clipping  that I believe she got from my Aunt Judy. It read: “Mom’s Soft Sugar Cookies”–so it was someone’s mom just not her’s! Regardless, each year when Fall arrives, I feel the urge to bake these cookies. They take a little time, so it’s worth it to make a couple batches at once and share with friends just like she did.

Cookie Ingredients:

3 14 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp. soda
12 tsp. salt
12 cup soft butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg unbeaten
1 12 tsp. vanilla
12 cup thick sour cream

Sift together flour, soda, and salt.

Combine butter, sugar, egg, and vanilla.

Beat together and add sour cream and flour mixture gradually.

Wrap up the dough in plastic and stick it in the fridge for about an hour.

Preheat over to 375°F.

Roll out on a floured board until 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. (These stay pretty thick. The trick is to make sure that they’re all around the same size so that they cook evenly.)

Sprinkle with sugar, roll in lightly.

Cut into shapes and place on a greased cookie sheet.

Bake 12 minutes or until golden brown.

Cool completely.

Buttercream Frosting Ingredients:

1/2 cup butter
1/8 tsp. salt
1 lb. confectioners’ sugar
2 egg yolks or 1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
2 Tbsp. milk

grandmas-sugar-cookies-hannahandhusband-12

Cream butter until soft and add salt.

Gradually add part of sugar to the butter.

Blend in egg and vanilla.

Add remaining sugar alternately with milk until it is of spreading consistency.

Add food coloring. I have recently fallen in love with Wilton Gel Coloring. Start with an 18 tsp. because it adds a lot of bold color very quickly.

Ice your cookies.

HGTV Home for the Holidays: Behind the Scenes

HGTV, holiday party

That’s me, Blondie, instagramming away!

If you’ve been watching my Instagram this week, you know that our Made + Remade crew over at DIY Network teamed up with HGTV’s Design Happens to throw a holiday party of epic proportions. In the coming weeks each of the blogs will be posting about how we pulled together everything from the mantel to the bar with our characteristic sparkle & charm. The fabulous team put together some really unique projects inspired by Liz’s vision of a modern, rustic holiday party. (See her mood board post here.) We shot in a stone room at the Knoxville Botanical Gardens, and while I can’t give away the finished shots, I just had to share some behind-the-scenes peeks!

HGTV, holiday party

Despite the fact that it made my face itchy (I’m allergic to Christmas.), that big, leafy thing on the left was one of my very favorites. My friend Virginia made it–she’s the one wrapped in fur below.

Kayla, Virginia, & Farima getting cozy with Grant hiding in the back. That fabulous bow with the mad iPhone skills? That would be my girl Deanne!

Keri rocked out a beautiful hanging sculpture. Finished pics will be on one of the blogs in a couple weeks.

Liz has a serious gift for baked goods. Wait until you see the rest of the food–it was gorgeous!

Blame the change in seasons, but things have gotten a little crazy here in Knoxville lately. We’ve been so busy! Here’s a little glimpse at what we’ve been up to, as well as links to some killer music, courtesy of my iPhone…

The weather is finally getting a little bite to it, which in turn is making our living room the perfect place to spend an afternoon.

My Holiday Mantel on DIY’s Made + Remade

diy-maderemade-mantle

This week on DIY’s Made + Remade, we debuted our latest Blogger Challenge. Inspired by the upcoming holiday season, five bloggers partnered with JoAnn to create a holiday mantel. The one I created is a wintry white with a vintage vibe that I have to admit is a lot more more neutral (read: elegant) than my normal red & green kitschy ornaments we’ll bust out in December. Take a look at all 3 of my posts:

Make My New Necklace Hanger

necklace-hanger

A couple weeks ago, Husband redid my closet (because he’s the best), and I decided that if my clothes were getting a stylish new home, my jewelry should too. So I went to Lowe’s–not quite sure what I was looking for. I ended up finding these beautiful pre-cut corbels in the aisle with the banisters and trim so I nabbed ’em!

Here are the other supplies:

  • a bit of paint & a brush
  • drill
  • screw hooks
  • set of picture hangers
  • hammer

01-necklace-supplies

I also got a sample of Pantone paint and applied two coats.

02-necklace-paint

Next, I drilled holes for the hooks.

Note: Be sure that your drill bit is set short enough that it won’t go all the way through the wood. Husband helped me with this part, and I was pretty excited to conquer some serious fear of the drill.

03-necklace-drill

Next, grab the hammer. Before you attach the picture hangers to the back, be sure you’re working on a soft surface. You don’t want to scratch up your paint job.

04-necklace-hanger

Then, just screw in your screw hooks, and hang it up.

05-necklace-hooks

If you have an old house like we do, you live in constant fear of the plaster cracking.

Here’s a little tip (again thanks to Husband): Place a piece of painter’s tape over on the spot before you start hammering in your nail. Then, just pull it off before you hang things up.

06-necklace-tip

Now there’s nothing left to do but hang up your necklaces.
