Jingle Bells for Your Front Door

Jingle Bells for Your Front Door | Hannah & Husband

For one reason or another, I have a newfound obsession with jingle bells. I was cleaning out my studio the other day when I found a jar of full of them, and I couldn’t resist. I decided to make a little winter door decoration perfect for the flurry of guests that come & go during the season.

Here’s what I did…

Jingle Bells for Your Front Door | Hannah & Husband

First, I crocheted five strands with a chunky cream yarn. Then, I made some fluffy pom-poms and tied them on to the ends.

Next, I tied jingle bells onto some jute rope (also found in my studio), and reinforced the thread I used to tie them on with some hot glue. You could do this step several different ways; this just worked best for the things I had on hand.

Laying out all the strands to the desired hanging lengths, I tied all the ropes together with a hair band at the top.

Next, I made a loop out of the jute rope for hanging.

With hot glue, I attached the base of the loop to the hair band.

Finally, I used hot glue and repeatedly wrapped the jute rope around to secure the top.

Christmas Comes to Tennessee

[cue Andy Williams] “It’s the most wonderful time of the year!” Christmas has officially come to East Tennessee! This weekend Husband and I knocked out a ton of Christmas shopping, watched a Christmas movie, decorated the tree, and drank our fair share of hot cocoa.

How are you feeling about the holidays?
Did they sneak up on you this year?

December seems to be passing so quickly, but I can honestly say this may be the first year I’ve felt so on top of things so early in the month since we got married. Although with my job, I’ve really been celebrating since mid-October! Is that cheating?

HGTV Handmade: Behind the Scenes

HGTV Handmade Behind-the-Scenes | Hannah & Husband

Back in October, I posted several pics on Instagram from a secret project we were working on at HGTV. This week, I’m so happy to be able to share these behind-the-scenes photos from the making of the first video on a new YouTube channel called HGTV Handmade. I did the styling for the shoot, which was in a loft in downtown Knoxville. As someone who usually live in the world of still photography, it was so cool to watch the camera guys in action.

Cleaning Up the House

Who said housework has no glamour? This gal! I’ve gotta tell you–you can streamline, you can organize, but cleaning your house will never be as glamorous as vintage ads make it look. And, trust me I’ve tried. These gals have a serious case of the clean-up crazies!

There are the ladies that look like they sniffed a little too much cleaning product.

The ladies who seem to be a little too excited about their cleaning products or tools. (If you have ever laid down beside your vacuum like the lady in this vintage Hoover ad, please comment below.)

And then, there are just the women that lie to you.

What’s with the crown?! Have you ever gotten a crown, tiara, or sparkly jewelry for doing housework?

(Speaking of crowns & tiaras, we should probably just take a moment and watch this clip. You know you were thinking about it too.)

So back to the story:

This weekend, when the family all went home and the turkey had been packed away, I went to town. You  might call it my own version of cleaning crazy. I like to call it…

I don’t know what it is about this time of year. Maybe it was the fact that we had a crowd for Thanksgiving in our tiny little dining room, and I got closterphobic. Perhaps it’s the fact that the holidays are starting–that special time of year where we put brightly colored, sparkly things on top of our already brightly colored, sparkly stuff. Or maybe (and this is probably the most likely) it was the fact that we had a photographer arrive at our house at 9am yesterday to do a fun photo shoot for HGTV HOME.

The Great Christmas Clean-up of 2013 | Hannah & HusbandThe point of the story is I went crazy. Two trash cans plus the entire bed of Husband’s truck were piled high with stuff we are throwing away. The back of my wagon has been filled with things to take to Goodwill. The pantry has been cleaned, my studio has been cleaned, and we discovered an extra room upstairs. There were clothes I’ve had since middle school, appliances we got for wedding presents that have never been used, and a pile of videos that I assume were there for decoration because we haven’t had a VCR since 2007.

What does this have to do with crazy vintage cleaning ads? Maybe those ladies aren’t so crazy after all. I got a little high with every bag of trash I took out. We pride ourselves on the things we choose to fill our lives with–the books, the music, the well designed coffee grinder. Cleaning will never be glamorous, but it can make you feel awesome. (Maybe not lay-down-with-your-Hoover-awesome, but awesome just the same.)

If you’re buying gifts this holiday season, consider what you already have in your own home. Get rid of some stuff before you bring more in. Give it away, throw it out, sell it to your neighbors. You’ll thank me later.

Thanksgiving Snapshots

Turkey in the Straw | Hannah & Husband

Our Turkey in the Straw is finally done! Click here for instructions on how to make him yourself.

Hello! Hello! How was your Thanksgiving? Our holiday weekend was filled with friends, family, and So. Much. Food. (Everyone says that, don’t they?) We host Turkey Day at our house every year, and I have to say that this year the highlight for me was this pie crust–the first one I’ve made myself in about 9 years. Why did I ever stop?

Other highlights documented below from the day of the feast include…

And, of course, it wouldn’t be a Hannah & Husband weekend without a little time in the mountains, right?

Thanksgiving Decoration: Turkey in the Straw

Turkey in the Straw DIY | Thanksgiving Decor by Hannah & Husband

Several years ago my mom picked up this fun little turkey. Every year she would buy an oversize pumpkin for Halloween, and then come November she would add the turkey to the pumpkin. This year as she pulled the feathers and head out of storage a couple of the dowel rods were broken, so she asked me to do a little turkey surgery. After I fixed hers I stuck them in a straw bale on our front porch. Voilà: Turkey in the Straw.

Before she came to take the turkey back, we decided it would be fun to have one of our own. We cut the shapes out of a scrap of 3/4″ plywood using a jigsaw (for a more permanent turkey use solid wood and be sure to waterproof it), and Hannah painted them to the colors of her choosing. Take a look at our process, and download the templates to create your own!

Our Home Bar: Repurposed Steamer Trunk

trunk-before

The trunk (and floor) before a major overhaul

Hannah and I have always loved taking weekend drives up into the Smoky Mountains. Early in our marriage, while we were still trying to furnish our new (to us) home, we stopped at a little antique store on one of these drives. Filled primarily with the usual suspects, we did happen across one item that stood out: a vintage steamer trunk.

Joe Versus the Volcano

I’ll never let go, Jack!

We loved the look of it, and thought it would make the perfect end table or ottoman. However after a year or so, and a steadily growing liquor cabinet, we decided to repurpose the trunk. We removed four of the drawers, keeping the top for cocktail books & napkins, and creating shelving with the rest. We kept the fronts for the bottom drawers in order to hide the less attractive (or downright embarrassing) bottles. The left side had a perfect shelf at the top for a cutting board we already had, and underneath I put together a wine and glass rack with pine and a brad nailer. We liked the look of the unfinished wood enough that we’ve kept it that way.

trunk-bar-hannahandhusband-1

The steamer trunk is a conversation piece, and utilizing it as a bar has given us a beautiful and organized way to store our wine & liquor.

Plus, when the house sitter comes over, we can close it.

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving Snack Recipe

I have a slight obsession with Charlie Brown so it is basically a given that my favorite Thanksgiving pick is A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. So this weekend, I decided to make A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving snack. Not being a fan of jelly beans, I used mini M&Ms for color. Enjoy!

Charlie Brown Thanksgiving snack, holiday, Hannah and Husband

Ingredients:

1 bag plain popcorn
1/2 bag pretzel sticks
1 cup mini M&Ms
1 1/3 cup white chocolate chips
1 Tbsp shortening

Steps:

Pop your popcorn. Then, by handfuls, put your popcorn in a larger bowl. The first time I did this, I forgot about all the un-popped kernels that may be in the bottom of the bag so my testers had to look out for seeds lest they lose a filling.

Next, mix in your pretzels and mini M&Ms.

Melt your white chocolate. You can do this over stove in a double-boiler or in the microwave in 30 second intervals. If you’re on the stovetop, you can put the shortening in right away. If you’re in the microwave, I like to wait about a minute and then add the shortening so it’s easier to mix.

Pour the white chocolate over the mixture and stir together immediately. Work quickly to make sure that the chocolate gets mixed in before it starts to harden.

Pour your mixture onto parchment paper to set up. Ours rested over night in the kitchen. The next morning, you can break it apart to serve!

Hers & His

Hers Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, The Duke Ellington Suites, brining the turkey

Hers

Reading:

Our most recent book club pick was Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan. I’ve really enjoyed it, and I think one of the main reasons is because I didn’t know a thing about the plot beforehand. I am never one to read adult fiction and, if I do, I have a tendency to read the last chapter first. (It’s all very Harry Burns, I know.) So if you’re looking for a good read or a good listen (I have the audiobook), I’d highly recommend it. Bonus: If you actually buy the physical book, the cover glows in the dark! All 10 of us gathered in my teensy half-bath the other night just to see.

Listening:

If you are looking for the perfect background music to take away the stress of this holiday week, then you’re in luck! I cannot stop listening to The Ellington Suites–three suites composed by Duke Ellington, one he wrote for Queen Elizabeth after they’re meeting in 1958.

Watching:

Each year, we host Thanksgiving at our house, and this year I’m going to try something I’ve never done before: brining the bird. Needless to say, I went straight to the master.

I wear the black hat, vintage trouble

His

Reading:

Ever since I finished The Imperial Cruise by James Bradley (fascinating book that will make you hate Theodore Roosevelt, a bit disjointed writing) I’ve been fascinated by who we classify as heros or villains and why. When I came across I Wear the Black Hat: Grappling with Villains (Real and Imagined) by Chuck Klosterman, I couldn’t resist. Rethink villains and heros, super and regular, with this book.

Listening:

We caught this performance on the Late Late Show, and I haven’t been able to stop listening to The Bomb Shelter Sessions since. Plus, in this video, the lead singer is wearing a peacock pocket square. Boss.

Old-Fashioned Sugar Cookie Recipe from Woo-Woo

Woo-Woo's Sugar Cookie Recipe | Hannah & Husband

When I was little, baking with Woo-Woo (my grandmother) was one of my very favorite activities. Last year around this time, I shared the story of winning 1st place at the church baking competition with her pumpkin pie on my personal blog. This year, as we get closer to the season of family and houseguests, I wanted to tell you about her sugar cookies.

Woo-Woo baked a few dozen sugar cookies for every holiday. They were huge cookies that were bunny shapes and Christmas tree shapes and snowmen shapes–all with a layer of pale pastel buttercream frosting. I used to think the recipes was her mothers. Then, when I finally got her to show me the recipe, she pulled out a newspaper clipping  that I believe she got from my Aunt Judy. It read: “Mom’s Soft Sugar Cookies”–so it was someone’s mom just not her’s! Regardless, each year when Fall arrives, I feel the urge to bake these cookies. They take a little time, so it’s worth it to make a couple batches at once and share with friends just like she did.

Cookie Ingredients:

3 14 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp. soda
12 tsp. salt
12 cup soft butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg unbeaten
1 12 tsp. vanilla
12 cup thick sour cream

Sift together flour, soda, and salt.

Combine butter, sugar, egg, and vanilla.

Beat together and add sour cream and flour mixture gradually.

Wrap up the dough in plastic and stick it in the fridge for about an hour.

Preheat over to 375°F.

Roll out on a floured board until 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. (These stay pretty thick. The trick is to make sure that they’re all around the same size so that they cook evenly.)

Sprinkle with sugar, roll in lightly.

Cut into shapes and place on a greased cookie sheet.

Bake 12 minutes or until golden brown.

Cool completely.

grandmas-sugar-cookies-hannahandhusband-11

Buttercream Frosting Ingredients:

1/2 cup butter
1/8 tsp. salt
1 lb. confectioners’ sugar
2 egg yolks or 1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
2 Tbsp. milk

grandmas-sugar-cookies-hannahandhusband-12

Cream butter until soft and add salt.

Gradually add part of sugar to the butter.

Blend in egg and vanilla.

Add remaining sugar alternately with milk until it is of spreading consistency.

Add food coloring. I have recently fallen in love with Wilton Gel Coloring. Start with an 18 tsp. because it adds a lot of bold color very quickly.

Ice your cookies.
