Party Photo Booth DIY

Party Photo Booth DIY | Hannah & Husband Looking for a cool way to document your New Year’s shindig? Let me suggest setting up your own photo booth. We set one up in my office for our Cocktails & Carols party, and it served as a living guest book. We captured some really fun moments, and (BONUS) it was a great alternative to people walking around with their phones all night taking selfies. Plus, it was super easy to set up! Here’s what we did. Party Photo Booth DIY | Hannah & Husband

On one wall of my office, we hung fabric and tinsel with push pins from the top of the window molding so we wouldn’t have to patch any holes in the wall. Then, we put a bench in front of that big enough for 2-3 people.
Opposite the fabric, we set up our camera on the self-timer setting with instructions hanging in front of it.

The party was “black tie or festive,” which gave Cindy an excuse to pull out the family jewels.
Note to self: we should all find more reasons to wear tiaras.

Finally, we added a table full of props. I would say glittery things and mustaches are musts. Bonus points for fab headwear!

Two Holiday-ish Cocktails

I have two new cocktails to share today, and I must confess that neither recipe is completely original to us. Saturday was our annual Cocktails & Carols party, and we had two signature drinks for our guests: the first was a Sage Ginger Sparkler and the second was a Jingle Julep.

Sage Ginger Sparkler | Hannah & Husband

I found the first idea on Pinterest and, in turn, I found a beautiful blog: Local Milk. The blogger behind Local Milk is a photographer in Chattanooga, Tennessee named Beth and her writing is absolutely beautiful. I’d especially recommend reading what she has to say about the herbs in this sage ginger cocktail

“…we can think of it as a tincture, as a potent medicine that lends itself to mindful savoring & promotes strength, prosperity, and cleansing…”

Sage Ginger Simple Syrup

12 torn, small sage leaves
1 inch ginger, minced
1 cup water
1 cup sugar

Bring all the ingredients to a boil over low heat stirring frequently.
Allow to boil until sugar is dissolved.
Turn off burner and let rest for at least 30 minutes.
Store in the refrigerator.

for the Sage Ginger Sparkler

sage ginger simple syrup
crystallized ginger
chilled prosecco
sage leaf

We dipped the rim in simple syrup and crystallized ginger.
Add one teaspoon of the sage ginger simple  syrup to your glass.
Top off with chilled prosecco.
Garnish with a small sage leaf.

Jingle Julep | Hannah & Husband

The second cocktail was a Jingle Julep. The base of the recipe was found via HGTV Gardens’ twitter, but we mixed it up quite a bit. Here’s our take…

Cranberry Rosemary Simple Syrup

2 cups water
2 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups fresh cranberries
1 bunch rosemary (6-10 sprigs)

Bring all the ingredients to a boil over low heat stirring frequently.
Allow to boil until sugar is dissolved.
Turn off burner and let rest for at least 30 minutes.
Store in the refrigerator.

Ice

We put cranberries & rosemary leaves in these large ice cube trays. Top off the ingredients with boiling water and put in the freezer immediately. Boiling helps the water stay as clear as possible.

Jingle Julep

mint
Cranberry Rosemary Simple Syrup
bourbon
ginger ale

Muddle mint with a bit of simple syrup in the bottom of your rocks glass.
Add your ice cube and one Tablespoon of Cranberry Rosemary Simple Syrup.
Pour one ounce bourbon.
Top off with ginger ale.

The Day After Christmas

Happy Holidays to you & yours! | Hannah & Husband

This year’s card–photo by Leah Bullard

The day after Christmas–whew! All joking aside from Tuesday’s post, we spent a lovely holiday with both of our families this year. Christmas Eve included a beautiful candlelight service at the church and a Christmas movie or two. Then, yesterday there was food, drink, and lots of time gathered around the fireplace.

My only goal for today? To actually get our holiday cards in the mail! The photo we used is from a lovely shoot we did with our friend Leah Bullard. (More on that soon.) What about you? What do you have going on today? Back to work? Taking down decorations? Traveling?

6 Gift Wrap Ideas

6 Gift Wrap Ideas | Hannah & Husband

This year, I’ve had a little too much fun wrapping gifts. Oh sure, Husband mocks my supply of back-up pom-poms, but during the holidays they come in super handy! As does my ridiculous collection of stamps, papers, & string. I like having an assortment of wrappings that are all personalized. I feel like any gift feels extra special when you take time to make the package unique. Don’t you think? So today, I’m sharing the love. Here are a few of the ideas I’m using this year.

6 Gift Wrap Ideas | Hannah & Husband

1. Everyone loves pom-poms!

Everyone! I used a giant pom-pom on my package for our book club book exchange, and it was a huge hit.

2. Don’t buy gift tags. Use stamps to make your own!

I adore my Christmas stamp set. Here’s a similar one if you need your own: Reindeer to Your Heart Stationery Set from ModCloth

3. Two words: toy dinosaur

I really love finding cute ways to use little miniature animals. You’ll see a couple other ways in the coming weeks, but here’s one that I spray painted pink and glued to a clothespin to hold on a gift tag. Bonus: you can put him on the tree when he’s done holding the tag!

4. Chalkboard Tags

I used leftover chalkboard paint to make a few gift tags for the men in my life. (Then, they felt too manly and I put hearts all around the names.)

5. Washi Tape

Use washi tape to label your packages or add a little funky detail to the package.

6. *SPARKLE!*

Always sparkle! I used leftover tinsel, gold wash tape, and a glittered wand to wrap this one, and it may be my very favorite!

How do you wrap gifts? Does everything coordinate or are things a little more personalized?

Host Gifts for Holiday Parties

As we are officially right in the throws of holiday party season, now is as good a time as any to talk about the “host gift.” As I learned recently, the trusty bottle of wine is not so trusty after all. Bring a bottle of wine to the wrong person, and you’re guaranteed a lecture about alcoholism and someone going to rehab. (It wasn’t fun, but it did make me a lot more aware of what I give to other people.) So today, I’m here to share with a few trusty gifts that will make you the favorite guest at any shindig.

Host Gift Ideas | Hannah & Husband

a potted Christmas Cactus

Really any indoor plant will do, but  a Christmas cactus is especially festive this time of year because (most of them) bloom bright pink or red flowers just around the holidays. One of our friends actually brought us a cutting from his own plant (which he’d gotten from his aunt I believe) that has livened up our kitchen for a couple years now.

Breakfast for the Morning After

Throwing a party or hosting overnight guests can be a lot of work! One of the coolest host gifts we ever received was a basket of muffins for breakfast the next day wrapped in a beautiful tea towel. Bonus: add coffee and a bottle of Baileys. (If you know they imbibe, of course.)

Local Goodies

This year, most of the gifts we are giving have either been locally made or locally purchased. Giving things from around your own hometown adds a perfect personal touch and supports local businesses. If you’re in East Tennessee, one of my favorites to give and receive are Blackberry Farm products. (Their cheeses are divine!)

A Poem of Peace

Presented without comment.

Amazing Peace: A Christmas Poem
by Dr. Maya Angelou

from the National Tree Lighting Ceremony on December 5, 2005

Thunder rumbles in the mountain passes
And lightning rattles the eaves of our houses.
Flood waters await us in our avenues.

Snow falls upon snow, falls upon snow to avalanche
Over unprotected villages.
The sky slips low and grey and threatening.

We question ourselves.
What have we done to so affront nature?
We worry God.
Are you there? Are you there really?
Does the covenant you made with us still hold?

Into this climate of fear and apprehension, Christmas enters,
Streaming lights of joy, ringing bells of hope
And singing carols of forgiveness high up in the bright air.
The world is encouraged to come away from rancor,
Come the way of friendship.

It is the Glad Season.
Thunder ebbs to silence and lightning sleeps quietly in the corner.
Flood waters recede into memory.
Snow becomes a yielding cushion to aid us
As we make our way to higher ground.

Hope is born again in the faces of children
It rides on the shoulders of our aged as they walk into their sunsets.
Hope spreads around the earth. Brightening all things,
Even hate which crouches breeding in dark corridors.

In our joy, we think we hear a whisper.
At first it is too soft. Then only half heard.
We listen carefully as it gathers strength.
We hear a sweetness.
The word is Peace.
It is loud now. It is louder.
Louder than the explosion of bombs.

We tremble at the sound. We are thrilled by its presence.
It is what we have hungered for.
Not just the absence of war. But, true Peace.
A harmony of spirit, a comfort of courtesies.
Security for our beloveds and their beloveds.

We clap hands and welcome the Peace of Christmas.
We beckon this good season to wait a while with us.
We, Baptist and Buddhist, Methodist and Muslim, say come.
Peace.
Come and fill us and our world with your majesty.
We, the Jew and the Jainist, the Catholic and the Confucian,
Implore you, to stay a while with us.
So we may learn by your shimmering light
How to look beyond complexion and see community.

It is Christmas time, a halting of hate time.

On this platform of peace, we can create a language
To translate ourselves to ourselves and to each other.

At this Holy Instant, we celebrate the Birth of Jesus Christ
Into the great religions of the world.
We jubilate the precious advent of trust.
We shout with glorious tongues at the coming of hope.
All the earth’s tribes loosen their voices
To celebrate the promise of Peace.

We, Angels and Mortals, Believers and Non-Believers,
Look heavenward and speak the word aloud.
Peace. We look at our world and speak the word aloud.
Peace. We look at each other, then into ourselves
And we say without shyness or apology or hesitation.

Peace, My Brother.
Peace, My Sister.
Peace, My Soul.

Cold Season is Here

Has cold season (aka the plague) hit your house yet? I wouldn’t get cocky if I were you. If it hasn’t hit yet; it will. Last week, I was just a girl enjoying the ability to breath through her nose. Today, I am a sniffling, sneezing mess. (For the record, Husband is a fabulous caretaker.)

So today I thought I’d share a couple of the things that I carry in my purse this time of year to make things a little better.

Cold Season Essentials | Hannah & Husband

a hanky – to wipe your nose while still hanging on to a shred of femininity

a pack of tissues – for when you actually need to blow your nose

hand warmers – because you will be freezing until March

tea bags – I carry mine in that cute little case that way I always have my favorite on hand!

eucalyptus oil – This stuff will clear out your sinuses like nobody’s business–just put a couple drops in hot water and inhale.

Alka Seltzer Plus – obviously

What else do you need? VicksReruns

… and hot toddies! (Click here for my recipe.)

Reading:

I am always the first to admit that I’m a huge Disney fangirl. At the moment, that fact is most apparent when looking at my stack of books. After all, what better way to get ready for the December 20th premiere of Disney’s Saving Mr. Banks than to reread all the Mary Poppins books? Don’t tell me I’m alone here!

Will you be reading Mary Poppins before December 21st?

If you want to read along, here’s my list…

Mary Poppins Comes Back
Mary Poppins Opens the Door
Mary Poppins in the Park
Mary Poppins from A to Z

Do y’all remember when Lady Gaga used to just waste her crazy on things like giant eggs and Madonna bras? Well this holiday season, she has endeared herself to me forever. Sure her Christmas special with the Muppets was weird, but America loves a girl who will live out her childhood fantasy on television wearing an inappropriately sexy outfit! And, now she’s dressing as a Christmas tree. A CHRISTMAS TREE! Check out the detail shots on PopSugar. Who else wants their own version?

Watching:

The NYTimes has been putting out some really great short films lately. Last week, I was mesmerized by these star-studded, one-minute films. This week, I am swooning over Joanna Coles’ executive assistant Sergio Kletnoy. If you have ever fantasized about living in Magazine Land, you must check it out!
